The Sounds: Jamie Woon Pushes Acoustic Soul Music Into the Electronic Age

Jamie Woon (born March 29, 1983) is a British singer, songwriter and producer signed to Polydor who gained widespread acclaim in 2010 for his single Night Air, following his earlier independent release, Wayfaring Stranger Ep. Woon’s sound and style is presently described as soul inflected vocals backed by samplers and programming, or a single guitar track. He describes his music as “… R&B, it’s groove-based vocal-led music …”. On 4 January 2011, the BBC announced that Woon had been placed fourth in the BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll. There has been some comparison of him to other boundary stretching artist like James Blake, Alex Clare, The Weeknd or even  Stateless but  Jamie Woon is infects the music with his own brand of soulful singing that will leave you wanting more. For some reason this track “Echoes” is in heavy rotation on my playlist. I think the beat is what gets me. The heavy thump combined with the falsetto makes this a killer song. Get familiar with Jamie Woon.

The Sounds: Bersarin Quartett

Artist:  Bersarin Quartett

Song: Oktober

Album: Bersarin Quartet

Description:

What would you get if Classic Orchestral music married Electronic Down-tempo music and had a love child? You’d get Bersarin Quartett. Bersarin Quartett is one man project from Münster, Germany founded by Thomas B. in 2006. Self-titled debut album was released February 2008 on Lidar Records.

The ‘lack of information’ shrouds the Quartett in a dark mysterious shadow and thusly adds an extra dimension to the Quartett’s offering. A further ‘dark and mystifying’ dimension is added via graphics with the album art showcasing a unique picture reminiscent of early 20th century Eastern-European theatre art. Of course the most important dimension is the music and the Quartett certainly live up to the image they have created through non-sonic communication.

The song featured here is called “Oktober” a sweeping blend of strings with a deep head nodding beat. It’s a great slow build of a groove, mixing meditative ambient melodies with down-tempo bass lines. I have this song on repeat. For me, it has this real soundtrack feel to it, almost melancholy. A great song with a mysterious composer…just the way I like it.

The Sounds

I want to introduce you to some of the new sounds I’ve been listening to. I’ve always-loved music, especially sounds that not only entertain but challenges my ears to re-evaluate what defines music. I think every gentleman should have an appreciation for music, especially the classics, whether that is the cool intonations and improvisations of Jazz, the wailing rhythms of Rock n’ Roll, the sensual swagger of R&B or the soothing sounds of Classical music. I have my favorites, but recently I noticed that am becoming increasingly attracted to the sub-genres in music. Electronica is such a broad genre, I thoroughly enjoy all of its cousins: Down-Tempo, Trip-Hop, Chillout and Ambient. For me, when I hear a song, I immediately attach it to a memory or an event. so It has to move me in some way either happy or melancholy. My mood is affected as well so I try to choose very wisely.
