Heroism In Holland

“People who inspire me and are passionate about style and the things they do in life are Heroes. To me, a hero is someone (male or female, heroes don’t discriminate) who has an independent free mind, is authentic and dares to shine without overdoing it. I noticed that today there aren’t enough visible role models anymore for young guys who want to distinguish themselves. I am pretty sure you agree with that. The world has become a more short-term high-speed place with not enough fixed values to live a really good life.”

– Joël Ferdinandus of LokalHeroz

Joël Ferdinandus is the owner of the all-inclusive gentlemen store called LokalHeroz in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Lamenting over the denim industry pandering to the 17-21 crowd, Ferdinandus used his background in men’s style to think up a way to re-introduce old-fashioned style and fashion etiquette to the modern ‘new-fashioned’ guy. In March of 2008 he opened LokalHeroz. I was struck by his ‘fashion-with-a-conscience’ approach to menswear. Many times when we think of the gentlemen, we think in terms of only suits, but Joël’s approach to to fashion is laid back, mature and innovative. Specializing in imported denim, Joël with his good friends and advisers, Maarten, Alfred and Filip, have put together a business model that I think is smart, creative and fun.

One of the reasons the store is called LokalHeroz is because of the love he shows to his community. Each month he displays a painting or pieces of artwork from the artist that live locally in the city. Taking cues from the natural environment around him, Joël’s store is an eclectic mix of art, design, fashion and lifestyle.
